Abstract

The effect of ileal resection and cholecystectomy on the fecal excretion of water, fat and bile salts was studied in 39 prairie dogs. The animals were divided into four groups: sham laparotomy, cholecystectomy, ileal resection, and cholecystectomy plus ileal resection. Eighteen days after the operation the animals were fed additional fat in the diet. Cholecystectomy alone did not alter the stool content of water, fat or bile salts. Ileal resection alone produced a more watery stool with increased fat and bile salt content. The addition of cholecystectomy to ileal resection did not further aggravate the fat loss but increased both the water and bile salt content. The results suggest that after ileal resection, cholecystectomy will not increase fat malabsorption but will increase the watery diarrhea and bile salt loss.
