Abstract
Genetic typing of α1-antritrypsin (α1AT) was performed in a group of 157 children (mean age: 10 years) affected by acute (viral) hepatitis (A, B, nonA-nonB). No major incidence of the pathologic PiZ gene was observed. This finding suggests that storage of α1AT in the cytoplasm of the hepatic cells does not increase liver susceptibility to infection by hepatitis virus and, moreover, demonstrates that genetic typing of the α1AT is an unnecessary procedure in children sufferning from acute hepatitis.
